In many countries, especially in Germany and Scandinavia, it is a tradition dating back to the 19th century to have a special calendar in December – an Advent Calendar – where each day a single window is opened onto some delightful picture or candy. Advent is the period before Christmas in many Christian denominations, but these days the calendars can just as easily be completely secular, and often have humorous or topical motifs.
